Prom Hair

Prom was so much fun this year...for me!! Hehe. I got lucky enough to have all three of these awesome young ladies to ask me to do their hair! I love them all. How beautiful are they??

This is Meika. She has the most beautiful, thick hair. She said she always ends up with a messy, side bun when she does it herself for dances and wanted something a little dressier for this beautiful dress. I think we have a winner!!

This is Shantell!! Equally beautiful, red hair!! She wanted more of a relaxed, modern style. We did a side french braid with a few strands left so it didn't look too "perfect". She looked beautiful!!

Camille!! She has a little bit more fine hair and she is always looking for more "poof"!! So, we backcombed it and pulled the top back and curled it loosely so that when (it was inevitable) the curls fell out, it wouldn't make that big of a difference!! She looked great!

Favorite New Product

I'm baaaack! I just thought I would share with you all my favorite "new" product.

It's by Tigi and it's their Rockaholic "Dry Shampoo". Now, the idea of dry shampoo is definitely not new, it's been around for ages. But this is the new version. It is amazing! I absolutely love it. On the days that I round brush my hair out straight, I use this the second day. I just run the blow dry through my hair to warm it up and then spray this in small sections right at the roots. Then I round brush just to touch up and heat up the product. It absorbs the oil and product from your hair and allows it to look fabulous! Takes all of the weight out and is a miracle product ;) Seriously, now that my hair is longer and takes about 30 minutes to blow dry, this is my new best friend. I don't want to creep anybody out, but I've actually been known to use it for third day hair. You'll love it. Try it. If you need it, let me know. I'll hook you up.

p.s. The only downside I have noticed is when I am using it constantly. Like three days a week. It tends to dry out the scalp too much. You do need some of your natural oils to keep everything from drying out and causing itching and such. So, use it sparingly and enjoy!

This is her awesome "Before" picture. I was trying to have her look down so you could see her bad roots....this is what we got... :)

She wanted to go dark and we added some caramel and red highlights through the mid section. So that they would just peek through the layers. It turned out awesome. OH yeah, and some sweet bangs!!

I wish you could see the color better, but you get the idea!! Thanks Natalie!! You rock!

Ross referred Yolanda to me for a haircut. I was just expecting maybe a trim...maybe something a little different.

These beauties walked into my salon.

Aspen is four and had never had a haircut before. She was a little bit nervous.

Look at that hair!! They had decided to donate their hair to Locks of Love. I LOVE people who do that, by the way ;)

Whaddaya think??? I love it!! They don't just do something half way...bare minimum. Go big or go home!!!

I got this list emailed to me, by my sister. I thought it was pretty funny. Most of this applies!!!!! Enjoy the laugh (and take some to heart!! ;) )

The 13 Things Your Hairdresser Won't Tell You (but secretly wants you to know)

1. I'm a beautician, not a magician. I can give you Gisele Bundchen's haircut, but I can not give you her face.

2.Come at least 5 minutes early. If you are going to be late, please call ahead. Please show some basic respect. This is a business and we run on a schedule.

3. Don't ask me to "squeeze" you in when I'm already booked. I'd be taking time and effort away from other clients, you wouldn't like being treat that way.

4. Hairdresser school does not teach about counter transference, projection, negative reinforcement or personality disorders. If you're looking for a therapist, all I have is a rat tail comb and an opinion.

5. Some women think if they keep their hair all one length like it was in high school, people will still think they're in high school. Guess what? You're not! As you get older you need to soften the lines around your face. Layers are the magic remedy.

6. Bodies and hair change as hormones change. If your hair is dry, listless and brittle or if it's not holding the color or style the way it used to you could be pregnant or going through menopause. (I'd also like to add my own here....while pregnant hair does fuNKy things. Color may not take the same, perms, etc...please know that!!!)

7. A trim is not just "a trim". It requires my skill, expertise and time. Would you say to a dentist "It's just a tooth"?? (I get frustrated when people think I should charge according to how much length I take off. If I take off 4 inches or 1/4 an inch, it's still the same haircut!!)

8. The single bill you stuff into the shampoo girl's hand isn't doing her any favors. A dollar doesn't buy anything anymore. (this one doesn't apply to me...no shampoo girl....feel free to tip generously, I do my own shampooing... :D )

9.If you want to buy a bottle of color and do your own hair to save a buck, you can live with the consequences. (Side note: Color correction usually costs AT LEAST double what a normal color would be. I'm just sayin....)

10. Some clients will say, "Cut my hair JUST like you did last time." This always baffles me. The average time between appointments is 6-8 weeks. I have a ton of clients, how on earth do you expect me to remember exactly what I did last time? If you want a carbon copy of what we did last time TAKE A PICTURE AND SHOW ME THE NEXT TIME!!!

11. Why do you think a child's haircut should be less expensive? Kids don't sit still, sometimes they scream and hit and usually it's just as much work (or more) than an adult. I have often done little girl's hair that is double or triple the work of some of my full paying adult women's haircuts....frustrating!!!!

12. Standing all day and using scissors and a blow dryer takes it's toll- I have arthritis in my fingers, calcium deposits in my wrists and my hearing is much less than it should be! I'm a physical wreck. (that's not even mentioning my feet, lower back and the perma-stained fingernails!! ) :)

13. We see women at their worst. Their hair is wet, they have foils on their head, they sometimes have no make up on. There's nothing to hide behind. So they tell us everything. Which, for the most part I love!! I love being a part of my clients lives and vice-a-versa. BUT...sometimes...TMI!!! Enough said!

Anne is my foxy friend and client. I have been doing her hair for many years :) I love her! She has always been blond with a few lowlights. Sometimes more blond, sometimes less blond. But....always blond.

Until a few weeks ago. She did it. She went dark!!!!

I really like the way it turned out. It looks really nice on her and it will (hopefully) be a little lower maintenance for her and less damaging!! Thanks Anne. You always look great :)

Big Change

Okay. It might not seem like a big change, but it really was!!! My sister has been trying to grow out her hair for about 7 or 8 months. But finally decided that she is just a shorter hair person!!

So....this is the only BEFORE picture I could find. ( I stole it off of her blog)

I really like the way it turned out.

Unfortunately it was really hard for her to get the back to work just right so we ended up going a little shorter on the very bottom and stacking it a little more, still so cute!!!!!

Dear all people who color their hair blond, who have gray hair or don't like brassiness,

Please use a toning shampoo/conditioner combo!! I beg of you. I color your hair and it looks great and then you go home and use a cheap shampoo and conditioner or one that is "volumizing" aka strips your color out....

Trust me.

If you use a purple based shampoo conditioner combo you will notice a huge difference in your color. It keeps it looking bright and healthy looking. It keeps the dull out and takes the brassy edge off of your color. The purple in it counteracts any gold or yellow tones.

Please. I beg of you. It will make your life easier and mine.

I haven't posted in FOREVER!! Mostly because I have run out of "new" ideas. I am loving posting before and afters and I ALWAYS forget to take the before. Well, guess what???? I totally remembered this time, without a reminder either!!!

So, my cute friend (and kind of relative :) ) Heather was ready for a change!! She had highlighted long layered hair. She wanted to go closer to her natural color, so it wouldn't be as high maintenance :). She wanted to cut a few inches off and keep the layering.

After!! I love the way this turned out. The picture doesn't do it justice. It made her eyes pop and her skin look great!!!

So, my "old friend" Heidi (a beauty school friend) asked if I would like to do hair for the "Miss Santaquin Pageant" a few weeks ago! You bet!! I love me a good up do. The more hairspray the better!

This was actually really fun! We were there just to kind of help out, assist if you will, the contestants in between sets. Pull it up for evening gown, curl it for talent, etc. etc.

Good times! The girls were all so cute, they really let me do what I wanted and had a lot of fun, so here's some fun pics. Enjoy!!

Trying Something New

So, I'm bored! I'm thinking of trying something new! I'm not sure but I'm thinking about this.....

What do you think? I mean, it would require some bleach ( a lot!!) a few plastic surgeries and owning a tanning bed, but, I think the benefits would outweigh the risks. Yeah? What do you think. My husband could (has) totally rocked a mullet. Nothing nearly this awesome, but with some extensions and again, the whole owning a tanning bed thing...Just saying. The man can pull off a mean Richard Simmons. Dog would be no problem for him!

HA! I caught an old episode of this "gem" at the gym today. I admit. I was totally sucked in. They were chasing a fugitive. There was blond hair and boobs from here to Christmas. How can you not watch that. Mid-run she chucks her stilettos and books it bare foot. Now, that's a bounty hunter right there! Just kidding. I am actually a closet "Dog" fan. I especially love the feather clip he puts in his hair!!

Just thought I would make you laugh! Although, she can do some serious damage with a set of "Benders" I'm just sayin.

My friend Pearl let me color her hair red!! She woke up one morning and decided that she wanted to be a redhead! Why not. You only live once. I'm so glad she trusted me and let me do this for her. It was so fun and it turned out GREAT!! You never know when you're coloring red onto grey hair. But.this.was.fabulous.

Okay, I had some clients come in on Friday to get their hair colored. They stretched my "funkability" a bit! One of them wanted green (blue-green) strips in the middle, so the top layer would cover it up and just kind of "bleed" through. This is a shot of the top pulled up so you can see the color better!

The other girl wanted her ends tipped in pink. She has crazy long hair so it was kind of interesting getting only the ends done. But, it worked and she loved it.

I absolutely love my daughters hair! It's beautiful and thick and a pretty color! But, she has a mind of her own and I have to let her do what she wants *within reason*!! She's been dying to cut it off. We made a deal that when it was long enough to donate to "Locks of Love" that she could. Well folks, she did it! This is her second time donating her hair! She loves to do it and it's a fun goal with a fun reward at the end of the tunnell!! So, what do you think?

Yearning For Length

I am right in the middle of growing out my hair. Ugh. Seriously, is there anything worse? It is really easy for me to help my clients through this process. I see them every 8 weeks, trim the ends, tell them it's getting a lot longer and send them on their way. But, when it's your head. Yikes. It's seriously something different. Everytime I attempt to grow my hair out, I get it to my shoulders, decide that I need layers, cut it myself, ruin it and cut it off. No kidding. Every time! So, I promised my husband I would give it the "old college try" whatever that means. Really, I would like to get it long one more time before I'm too old to wear it that way. Nobody wants to see me at 50 with hair to my butt. It just wouldn't be pretty. So, here goes nothin'. I'm dreaming of...

The fact that all of these beautiful women are under the age of 30 and a size 00 doesn't mean anything. Right????

But, right now I feel like it's this...

Have I ever mentioned my loathing of cutting my son's hair? No? Well, let me fill you in. I HATE IT! That is all. Just kidding. I can cut anyone else's children's hair with not much trouble at all. This age is hard, but usually I can do it no problem. Maybe it is just because I am such a perfectionist with haircuts, and these haircuts I have to look at every day! Maybe I don't do that great of a job on my clients, I just don't see them every day!! ha ha. So, seriously though. My other two children. No problem. Sat there, wiggled a bit when it was itchy, but not this guy. He's squirmy, squirrley, be-boppy, and down right wiggly. He tries to rip off the cape and grab my scissors (duh!!), and just screams. It is very stress filled. So, if you have seen him lately and wondered why he looks so scraggly. It's because I don't want to cut his hair!! I'm starting to think it would be worth my money to pay someone else to do it!! Wouldn't that be funny??

You have no idea. Don't let that cute face fool you.... The work it took to get him from that...

Looks okay from here. Just don't look too close!! Just appreciate his cuteness when you see him, because it's going to be a long while before I cut it again! I'm starting to think long hair on boys?? Not so bad...

One of my really good friends from when I was growing up, came in today to get her hair cut!! She has this mass thick, curly, coarse hair!! So fun! She kind of let me do what I wanted. She gave me a general idea and said go for it! She has had it long for quite a while and was just sick of it and wanted a fun change. Boy did we give her a change!!

Julia's First Haircut

I absolutely love doing "first haircuts". It's one of my favorite things. It's not that they are easy, by any means, or fun (usually) but when it's your niece (or nephew or your own child!!) it's always fun to be a part of that big "first". I am quite certain that I am in many scrapbooks. Not always looking lovely, but as part of that memory. So, that is fun. My niece Julia has this awesome curly, crazy hair. I totally love it. I always wanted a curly haired girl. It's so awesome. But, it needed a little shape and taming!! So, we did it. She wasn't a huge fan, but she did pretty well, considering. It turned out really cute. Hopefully she won't scream every time she sees me. Oh well, even if she does, it's only once a year, right?? Just kidding.

Who Needs Haircolor, Anyway??

Well, my friends. I am noticing, since it has been entirely too long since my last color, that I am officially going gray! AAAH! I am only 32. I think that is pretty young to be going gray. I do have great genes for it, though. NOT! Aren't there always things that we wish we could take out of our genetic pool??? Early gray? Sassy additudes?? Smart alecks?? I know, I know. Me, too. Oh well. This one I'm stuck with. I supposed I can't complain too loudly to the "going gray early" gods. It's how I make my living. I just never thought that I might ACTUALLY have to deal with it myself. Oh well. At least I am "blonde" and it blends a little easier with blonde. Or should I just let it go....

On vacation in Mexico, I decided to have my daughter's hair braided. I have always wanted it done myself. But, let's be honest, a 32 year old with 4 inch long hair isn't quite the same! I think it turned out so cute and it made the cruise incredibly nice for me! Low maintenance hair! The best thing ever!!

I just have to post this funny situation. I have a dear sister, who has a slight hair obsession. That word doesn't quite come close, but those of you who know her, understand. She is always on the look out for something to make her hair better, straighter, shinier, etc. So, when I have a suggestion, I pass it on. She and I are also hair tool freaks. We need to have something that works and works well, because if you're going to obsess, it has to be good! So, I buy or have her buy her hair tools at the beauty supply store so that she gets something really great that works well and at a bit of a discount. Well, let's just put it this way, she's cursed. She can go through 3 blowdryers and 2 flat irons, before I even go through one. I'm not sure why, since I use my tons more, on my clients and abuse the heck out of them. She just has bad luck with them. So, this last time she bought a blow dryer, I convinced her to spend the extra ( a lot!!) to get the one I use. It's worth it, I told her. I have had this blow dryer for like almost 3 years. I use it non-stop. It's basically the best blow dryer on the planet! So, she did it. This was like 7 months ago. Well, Friday I got a phone call from her. Shut up. It doesn't work. I think she is doomed. They do have a warranty on them, but in order to get them fixed or replaced, you have to send them in. Have you ever not had a blow dryer with naturally curly hair, that you round brush and flat iron every day??? Not good. Poor girl. I don't know what to tell her or do for her. This may not be funny or entertaining to anyone else, but when she called me, I couldn't stop laughing. Of all the people. So, what did I tell her to do? Go to walmart and buy the cheapest one they have. It'll probbably last you 10 years!

Making The World A Better Place One Haircut At A Time

Just a little FYI, last Friday at work, I made the world a little bit better. I cut off a mullet. I haven't seen one of those for a while, so it made me smile a little bit. All of you people that see this particular person, from now on, can thank me later!

New Post (yeah!!!)

Sorry for the lack of postage lately! I have just been wildly, crazy busy. But, now hopefully it's going to calm down a bit!! I have been doing a ton of fun hair latley, but I always forget to capture it with a picture. Working from home this week, my sweet husband has been there to remind me!! He's awesome and knows that I always regret not having taken pictures. So. Here goes!

This first one is my cute friend Sara. She is also a hairdresser, and was ready for a change. I feel bad, because I had already washed her hair, when I remembered, but you get the point!!

She had some long bangs that she is trying to grow out and long hair that has felt rather thin and she was just ready for a change. This picture doesn't really do it justice, but it turned out REALLY cute!!

She's georgeous, so she doesn't need any help, but she looked great and I hope she likes it!! (Thanks for letting me snap pics Sara!!)

My next victim, I mean client is Corey. She is freakin hot and hilarious to boot!! On a dare or prodding from her cute friend Megan, she decided to color her hair all dark. Scary for her, but excitement as well. Her hair had been colored a lot, and was really blonde on the ends. That part made me a little bit nervous. But, on we went. In order to get her hair to a pretty brown color, or even any brown color at all, we had to "fill" her hair. Which means, I had to make her look like Ronald McDonald. Extension Mania

A frequently asked question I receive is this:
How can I make my hair look like theirs (points to a celebrity) all the time!

Answer: Have a personal stylist or get extensions.

Seriously, how do you think they change their looks so often and are not bald from all of the chemical processes and color changes? Hello extensions.

Here is my advice. They are high maintenance and expensive. But, if you get them, shop around. Go to someone who has A LOT of experience and knows what they are doing. Seriously, we have all seen THAT GIRL walking down the mall and even your husband can tell she has extensions. You don't want to be her. If you do it, do it right!! That's my two cents. Now, I thought you might enjoy a little celebrity montage of extension hair dos! Some are better than others (Hello Paris!) But, oh well. Enjoy!

I have a lot of clients ask me how I know how to just do any kind of haircut. Well, the truth of it is, there aren't that many different kinds of haircuts. There are different versions, lengths, and things you can do to tweek them and make them specific to a person and their hair type. But there aren't that many different kinds of haircuts. As I was thinking about this post, I began thinking about some of the people who have influenced hair the most. I am sure that I left some really important people out, but....right now, this is all I could come up with.

Farrah, who doesn't love the Farrah. In fact, I have a few clients in Price who still get the Farrah. Just kidding. Kind of.

This picture is a MUST post, only because as I was going through beauty school "The Rachael" was huge!! Beyond huge. I think I did this haircut like 700 times. I could do it in my sleep. And, the funny thing is, I love this haircut. I think it is so cute. But, I am so over it!!

Meg, I loved Meg's hair in her romantic-comedy hayday. She looked so cute in it. This is another one of those haircuts that I did a ton, still a classic, I think!

The "Pob" Posh-bob. I love this haircut, in fact I am wearing a version of this right now. One of the new classics.

I loved when Katie cut her hair like this. She finally looked classy, polished and beautiful. Wish she still had it!

When Jessica Simpson cut her hair like this, it was a mini-Rachael craze. Everyone!! wanted it. I do like this cut a lot, still. This kind of started the heavy side bang trend.

Halle, if we were all only this beautiful, and could pull this off. Love this haircut.

Jess started and fueled the loose curl craze. Before this, we were all stuck in the stick straight phase. I love the soft, loose curls. Thanks Jess, you did good!

Well, I hope you enjoyed my hair trip down memory lane. Maybe I have inspired you to try something new. Bangs, layers, feathered hair, a pixie cut! Whatever it may be, make it a good one.

The Basics

I've decided to compile a list of must-haves. Things that I can not live without on a daily basis. I am talking about styling my daughters hair. For mine, I have already listed my favs. Like, the Chi flat iron, the Centrix blowdryer, the pomade, the hairspray. So, this is my "basics" list:

Good shampoo. ALWAYS, ALWAYS start with good shampoo and conditioner. I always suggest professional products to all of my clients. If you don't use them, you should. Just try it once, you'll be hooked. You may say that they are too expensive, but I disagree. One of the reasons I suggest Biolage a lot, is that it is a really good basic line, and also inexpensive. The cost per bottle is a lot different, but the professional lines are much more concentrated so you need to use a lot less, so it goes a lot further. Trust me. Try it. Especially if you spend the time and the money to get your hair colored. If you are willing to invest money into making your hair look nice and have a great color, you are wasting your money if you are not using a good product on it! Trust me. Recently, I had a client, who I assumed was using a good shampoo and conditioner. She was complaining that her color was washing out so fast and starting to fade to a really red, brassy color. We could not figure out what the problem was. Lo and behold, she was using Garnier Fructis. AARGH!! She had wasted so much time and money worrying and re-coloring her hair, when it was as simple as that. Just do it. Do it for me, so I don't freak!!
Next is just a basic brush. A vent brush, as I call it. Something that has wide enough teeth that you can comb through your hair after the shower and it doesn't rip it all out. Also so you can brush it the next morning and it gets all the tangles out! Could not live without a brush like this!!! Feel free to spend as much as you like on this!! See, you can save your pennies on your brush and save it for shampoo!!

A squirt bottle. So innocent, small and unassuming. HOLY COW! I think, between my boys and my daughter (and a little ironing!!) I use this the most. It helps to spray the hair before pulling it back in a pony tail, pushing it back in a headband, or just if it's doing something funky!

The rat tail comb. Irreplaceable. This sucker parts like there is no tomorrow. For as many intricate things that I do to my daughters hair, I use this a ton. Even if you're just doing pony tails or braids, it gives you that nice crisp part line. LOVE IT!!

Butterfly clips, to separate hair while styling different sections. Especially when round brushing.

Aaahh, my round brush. I have a very fond relationship with my roundbrush. We go way back. This is how I get crazy smooth hair in pony tails and buns and it straightens hair like no other!! This is the only kind of round brush I will use. I have every size imagineable. You couldn't pay me to use something else.

Clear rubber bands. Fairly self explanitory, but I use them a ton. I just like using them because you don't have to find colors to match outfits, find 10 that match each other, they're awesome in any thickness of hair.

Thick elastic hair bands. My daughters hair is so crazy thick, that we use this like crazy and break them just as much. I buy them by the pound!! They are the only things that hold her pony tail up all day without sagging.

My old friend. I know I 've posted about it before, but it's part of everyone-in-my-house's daily routine. I love this hairspray. I can't tell you why, you just have to try it to believe it. It just smooths and finishes and holds every style, just where I like it!

Wow, that was a long post. I apologize, I didn't mean to bore you to death, but I thought I would just share a few of my must-haves!! Hope you find something you like!!

Hat's Off (or on in this case)

Today is definitley a hat day. I know this is kind of a funny blog post for a hair blog, but I think it is relevent. You can make an outfit so cute and add a little additude or funk to it by just adding a hat.

Another bonus is, you only have to do the bottom half of your hair!! Even if you have short hair, hats still look cute. When I was growing up, we really didn't have a lot of options. It was Gap baseball caps and occasionally a stolen baseball cap from your brother. But, now!! There are so many options, so cute and so feminine!! I love hats. I don't know that I'm one of those people that LOOKS GREAT in hats, but I do like wearing them. Here are just a few pics I found on the web of some cute hats, and how it can make your outfit!! Enjoy!

Now, to actually pull one off.....

Fun New Curlers

Okay, I am forever in search of something that will curl and stay curled in my daughters crazy thick long hair. Something that she will not complain about (I don't think that exists!), and something that won't hurt her head to sleep on at night! I think I may have found just the thing. One of my clients was telling me about these curlers she bought from Sally Beauty Supply. They are called Curlformers.

They are a bit expensive, but for me it is an investment. I will be using them a lot! You can buy them in the pack that comes with 6 small and 6 med and 6 long and a hook. Well, since I had no use for the med or the small, I just bought the packages seperate and then the hook. Once you see them, you will understand what I mean. It took us a few minutes to figure it out and make it work smoothly. But all in all, it was a great experience. No complaining on her part. Whew!

Below are a few pictures and I'll kind of explain to you how they work.

We started of with wet hair fresh out of the shower. But you could probbably do dry hair and just squirt it down or even just do dry hair and put gel or mousse on it, it would probbably work really well.

Then I took a pretty good sized chunk. Coated it with mousse. Use whatever you like.

The instructions are on the package, but this kind of shows you the basic idea. We did find one trick though, before you slide the hair in the hook, you should twist it a few times. It keeps the hook from becoming tangled in the hair. You just pull the curler up towards the scalp and pull the hook out of the curler. They come in these flat things that are hollow. It's hard to explain, but then you shove the hook up through the bottom, hook it onto the hair and pull it through. Voila!

It really went rather quickly. I used smaller parts the closer I got to the top of her head, because it's really thick in there! So, the smaller the part, the easier it is to dry and curl.

We have the luxury of having a hood dryer at home. If you do not, you could just run a blow dryer over them for a few minutes. I did this because her hair is so thick, it never would have dried before morning. If you have fairly think or med. hair, it would probbably be fine without it!

Pretty curl, right? Nice and even and no fuzzy ends!

Sorry for the face, we were having one of those mornings!!

That's more like it! Just a little fluffing and seperating of the curls and there you go!

A Word to the Wise

Okay, friends. I know that I suggested going darker for fall and winter and that I love change. But, not too much change. I have had a few (or more than a few) clients in the last year that want to go from dark to blonde to dark. Whew! That is just too much for you hair to handle. Especially if you like to be really blonde and then really dark. Your hair only has so much life in it. If you keep damaging it and changing colors, your hair is eventually going to put it's hands in the air, surrender and turn into cotton candy or turn completley black. Either of which is probbably not what you want. So, just do me a favor and make up your mind already! Just kidding. I am definitley a fan of change, but by that I mean adding some low lights to your highlight weave or adding some red to your normal brown, just subtle changes. Unless you are ready to commit. If you're ready to go for it and make it a fairly permenant change, then by all means. Do something fun. But if you're going to change your hair color back next month, try a semi-permenant color that's not so drastic or just add small changes. You might be surprised by how much of a difference a little change will make to you. Sorry for my little rant, just do yourself a favor and be more subtle. Your hair will thank you for it!!

One of my Trade Secrets

Well, It's time for me to reveal one of my hair styling secrets. It's not one that I share easily or give up often. It's what kind of blow dryer I use. I'm just kidding, I tell everyone who wants to know. For it is the best blow dryer in all the land!! It is the Centrix 5000 blow dryer. This sucker will blow the paint off your walls and the skin off your face, so use at your own risk. It actually has so much power and blow dries so quickly that on clients who have thinner or finer hair, I use it on medium speed and heat. It seriously is that best, ever. As with anything, you get what you pay for. It is a bit on the pricey side. I was using another type of hair dryer for many years, that I quite liked, but I was replacing it every year. I had come to accept that. But, no longer. I use this sucker frequently. I mean a TON!! So, the price is worth it to me. It pays for itself in no time! To prove my point, I will tell you this quick story. A few years ago, I was working at a salon only on weekends, and I would leave my stuff there, so I wouldn't have to cart it back and forth. So, my boss used it one day, because she was using my station. She was sold. She went right out and got one. Anyone who has used it, loves it! So, if you are having problems with your dryer or just need a great one, try this one. The link is on my side bar. Any questions, leave me a comment and I'll get back with you! This is especially great if you have really thick hair and if you have curly hair that you are round brushing out straight, it has a lot of power and saves you a lot of blow dry time! Funky Hair

Well, as I mentioned in my earlier post, my kids had rock star day at school today. I just thought I would show you how I used the funky colored hair extensions. She wanted it to be crazy, so I braided it last night and put gel in it. Then, I had her sit under my hood dryer for about 1/2 hour before bed. Just because her hair is really thick and never would have dried before morning if we did not!! Then, we just undid the braids, I backcombed a mohawk section really high and just pinned it down in the back. The braids and the gel helped it back comb really well and it will have no problem staying in all day! Then, we just went through and randomly placed a few pink streaks throughout the 'do. They are kind of tricky to hide, but look so much better if they're hidden. They were pretty long, so I cut off about 3 inches. Becareful not to cut their real hair!!!

Fun Hair for Halloween

So, I've been seeing these colored hair extensions everywhere lately. I don't know if it's because of Halloween or not, but I see people wear them in their everyday hair and I think it is so cute! Obviously I wouldn't wear pink in my hair, but that's not to say that someone might look really cute with it. I have been looking around and the easiest place to find them (and probbably the cheapest) is Sally Beauty Supply. They come in all kinds of colors. Blue, pink, white, green etc. Here are kind of some cute pictures that I found, to give you an idea of what I mean.

They come in tons of colors, you can buy them online or this is how they come at Sally's :

You can just buy one or two or more. To make sure that they look the best, make sure that you put them underneath some of your natural hair. They come attached to a little clip, so if you put in on top of your hair, it will look kind of silly. And, try to contrast your hair as much as possible. That way, they stand out more. On dark hair I have seen blue and green and they just don't stand out as much! So, give it a shot. My daughter has Rock Star day at school on Wednesday, and I think I am going to get some of these to spice her hair up a little. So, go on...try it!

The "Big Bang"Theory

NO! I am not blogging about my sisters big bangs from 1985. I am blogging about one of my new favorite things. I know bangs are about as new as...hair. But, I love the new full, long bangs. The soft, yet strong bangs. I just love them. Now, again, bangs are one of those things that are a personal preference, some love them, some hate them. Some try and try to wear them, but just can't. (Guilty). Some can't live without them. So, I found some of my favorite celebs with some great bangs. Love them!!

Don't you just love the varitey in styles of bangs. You can wear them any way you are comfortable. They just soften your face and style and just change things up a bit, if you're thinking about doing something drastic, but are unsure, bangs are an easy thing to try, not too life-altering, but fun to try. If you hate them, grow them out. So shoot me for suggesting it!!

I love the fall! I love it because everyone feels like they can add a little dark to their hair, or go completley dark! I love it. Sometimes, especially in Utah County, I feel like all I do is a blonde weave, long hair with layers and cute side bangs. As much as I love this haircut and on some people it looks amazing, it's just nice to see change! As I mentioned in my post below, I love change! It just warms up their hair, and those lucky few who can be either blonde or brown, I am jealous!! I have tried going completley dark before, let's be honest, it wasn't good. But I do love adding low-lights to add some interest! So, be brave, go dark, or at least add some!!

You Tell Me

I have been thinking a lot lately (remember it's my job) about celebrity haircuts. It seems like everyone is chopping off their long locks and going for the Pixie. I know I posted about Victoria Beckham in an earlier post, but let's be honest. Not even all celebrities who are rich, famous, skinny, pretty, have a personal stylist etc. etc. look good in a pixie. I want to know your opinion. Because I am always a fan of change. I love to see people mix it up a little bit. Even if it means growing hair out. It's painful and annoying, but it's change. That's why I love color, I suppose!
Love this look on Natalie Portman. She just looks so much younger and fresher (word?). Plus she has the face shape and eyes for it!!

Don't necessarily love this look in Michelle Williams. Maybe it's just the dress that I don't love, but I just think the long hair is softer and makes her look more feminine!

Love, love, love this on Posh. But I loved her old haircut, too. I totally copied her! But, despite her complete lack of musical talent, I think she would look good in anything. As long as her hair is dark, blonde looked too fake and did not look good on her skin tone!

I don't particularly like Kirsten Dunst for some reason, but I think she looks better with longer hair. Maybe a different short style, but this one doesn't work with her face shape. For some reason every time I see her she looks like she just woke up from sleeping on a park bench, if you're in the public eye, put a little effort into your style. Don't go crazy, but a little effort might be nice!

Well, there is my little rant about celebrity pixies. You might notice that I left off one fairly famous person with a fairly famous pixie, Katie Holmes. I really do think she is pretty and she usually looks great. But I think with this last haircut, she cut off some of her style. She always looks undone these days. Her hair is never done, wearing baggy clothes. Maybe if she did her hair, it would be a really cute style. But I couldn't find one picture of her online with it even looking semi-normal. Oh well. I'm pretty sure that none of these people give a rats butt what I think about their hair. Just sharing my opinion. Let me know what you think? Can anyone wear a pixie? Who's your favorite? Long Time Friend

It's time again for a product spotlight. This is Kenra Thermal Styling Spray 19. I love this hairspray. I have a very fond relationship with it. It takes a lot for me to really love a hairspray, it has to have certain qualities. This one has it. It has to not stink!! I know, but really for as much as you use hairspray, you don't want to gag every time you use it, right? It has to hold really well, without feeling like your hair will break if you touch it. Yep, got it. It has to be moldable, by that I mean, you have to be able to spray it and then move your hair a bit and have it hold where you put it! Uh-huh. And, last but not least, it has to wash out clean. You all know what I'm talking about, no hairspray flakies! No way, not here.

So, there you have it. One of my tried and true friends, one of my basics, one of my can't-live-withouts! If you're in need of hairspray, might I suggest this one. I have a link on my sidebar. My good friend Tina came in for a haircut tonight! She decided to chop it all off, again! A few months ago we cut off 10" for Locks of Love. So, we decided to go that short again!

Feeling The Love

Love, love, love. Biolage Detangling Solution. If you have hair that tangles easily, hair that is colored and a bit dry and dehydrated, this is the stuff for you! I found this product a few years ago, when my daughter had really, really long hair. We used to have yelling wars just to get her hair combed out after a shower. This is a detangler, so it is not too heavy, but it leaves your hair soft and combable (word??) after washing. Just enough conditioning to make it feel good and soft, but not enough to make it feel heavy or greasy! It's kind of the perfect conditioner. I actually recommend this to ALL of my clients, maybe a few exceptions of incredibly thrashed hair who need something more!! So, go ahead, don't be scared. Give it a shot! Let me know what you think. Favorite New Headband!

So, I have a new favorite thing, it seems I have a lot, right? But, this is something that is for everyone. Short hair (So Cute on Short Hair!!!), long hair, thick, thin, young and old. Well, not too old :) I found these headbands by PINK BENCH at the Women's Expo last year. I had to head back to their booth this year. They have zillions of fabrics to choose from. Unfortunately they only had about 10-12 on their website. Oh well. They seem to be at lots of Expo's. You can find them somewhere. They have a spot on their website to contact them. I put a link on my sidebar under favorite sites. This seems like a lot of pictures for a silly headband. But, there are a few things that make them extra special!!

This is what one of them looks like all laid out straight.

On the underneath side, the side you put against your head, it has these little velcro circles that make it stick in your hair with no sliding out and it doesn't have to be tied crazy tight to stay in! Such a cool feature.

On one end of it, there is a loop.

On the other end there is 2 lengths of ribbon. When you get it situated on your head, the way you want it, you take one end of the ribbon and thread it through the loop on the other end. And then you just tie it in a bow, like you tie your shoe.

This is what it looks like when you tie it in the back. It actually looks really cute on short hair, because all of the headbands have different colored ribbon on them, so you see this cute bow hanging out the back.

Cute on long hair. It just adds a little flair to otherwise boaring school uniforms! :) Plus, they have the cutest fabrics.

Favorite New 'Do

Wow, have you seen Posh's new 'do? Love it!

Let's be honest, 99.5% of us in the "real world" who are not 5'6" and 25 pounds, would not look this stunning. But, on her, I love it. I have a few clients in mind, who I think would look amazing in this, but I'll let them decide :) Anyway, hope you love it as much as I do.

She has the best hair texture (so it seems) for this haircut. Fairly thick hair, with some sort of natural body, wave or curl. It is probbably quick and easy. Round brush the top a bit, flat iron pieces of it, run some pomade through it, and voila! If we all only had it this easy!

For Those About To Straighten....

Matrix Sleek Looks Smoothing Polish

Now, this product is for those of you who have thick wavy or curly hair and like to flat iron or round brush your hair out. After round brushing, use a small bit of this and smoothe over hair from ends to roots. It has the consistency of just a little bit thicker than shortening, gross I know! But just kind of dig your fingernail in and scoop out a bit, A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY! Then go ahead and flat iron. This just kind of helps the flat iron glide through a bit smoother and protects your hair from the heat. After you are finished, and you still have a few flyaways, go ahead and use another small bit and smooth through your hair. Notice: This product is not for thin, fine or limp hair. You will just end up with greasy looking hair. If you have this hair type, please refer a few posts down to the After Party by TIGI. Fun New 'Do

Okay, I didn't mean for this to become a little girl's hair blog, but bear with me, because that's what's going on in my life right now. Trying to find styles that WE both agree on, not too babyish, not too boaring...So, Sunday, this is what we came up with!
Part hair down the middle and then part from ear to ear. Make 3 sections in each front section. Then do 2 knots in each smaller section and use the end from the first one into the second one. Wow, that didn't make much sense, even to me, and I wrote it. JUST COPY THE PICTURE!!!

Then, use the rest of the hair and put it in pony tails and do messy buns. You could also just do one pony tail or one messy bun. Her hair is getting a little long for messy buns, that's why they don't look so hot, it's been a few hours and a few cartwheels later!

She liked it, honestly that's all I can ask for! Enjoy, I'll try to spice it up a little bit.

Hair Flower

Okay, I totally stole this style from another hair website, but I had to. It is so cute and SO EASY!! You just put the hair in a high ponytail. Wrap the band tightly so that it doesn't loosen throughout the day. Then wrap another band around that one but leaving just a little slack in it to tuck the braids under. Then section your pony into 5 separate sections and braid each one. Tie with a small band on the ends. I like the tiny plastic no-tear rubber bands. They are hidden the easiest. Then, tuck each braid under the band and leave the ends out. You can leave them spikey or curl them under. Hopefully that's easy to understand. Please leave me a comment if you have any questions. Favorite Flat Iron EVER

Just in case you have been living under a rock, and have never seen a Chi flat iron, this is it!
I have long been of the opinion that it really didn't matter which flat iron you used, as long as it was decent quality and didn't rip your hair out...Until I tried a Chi. They are one of the, if not the, best flat irons out there. They don't have a temperature control, which bothered me at first. But, it is made of such high quality material and gets just the right temperature in a matter of seconds. You don't need to go over and over each spot like you do with flat irons. It is an instant straight. It is a beautiful thing. If you are a flat iron user and are in the market, may I suggest a Chi. They are a touch on the pricey side. But you get what you pay for!! Trust me. I have a link on my side bar for Chi Flat Irons. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Bridal Hair

It's not every day that you get to do someone's hair on their wedding day. It is something that I take very seriously and enjoy very much! It is so fun to do something out of routine of cuts and colors. Shanalee has been a client/friend of mine for quite some time! It seems like I am always doing her hair for a wedding. I have never met someone who was in more weddings than her!! But, this time it was for her. She has great hair, but it is all one length and to the middle of her back. That is always a challenge. Trying to get hair that long to stay put and especially when it is going to be 90+ degrees today! But, I think the result is fabulous. I really need lessons on picture taking, I'm sorry Shanalee for the lighting. I did promise her a disclaimer! She was terribly embarrassed that she did not have her make up on. I think she looks great. Like anything, I think it looked better in person, but here are a few shots. Hope you like it!

Hopefully the 90 degree weather was no match for my favorite "liquid cement" Shaper Megahold. (Refer a few posts down for details!) Shouldn't move for a week!

Cute New Toy

I was on one of my favorite sites for cute little girl hairstyles and they kept referring to these hair accessories called "Trash Ties". Didn't really appeal to me. Until I went to the Trash Ties website. They had the cutes ideas and fun hairstyles. It is a hair tie made of wire covered in ribbon. It is really flexible and bendable and you just twist and bend and it holds securely. Cute in buns, braids and in place of clips or barretts. I just got mine in the mail tonight. I have been patiently waiting for 2 weeks!!! So, here is just a cute quick idea to pull back the front of your hair. In this case, we are growing out bangs. PERFECT! They come in a million different colors and patterns. The ones we used here are the brights. They also come in 2 different lengths. 4" and 25" I believe. I can't wait to try them some more. This Weeks Favorite Product

Forgive the perverse packaging. This is a fabulous product. It is by BED HEAD and it's called AFTER PARTY. It has a few different uses that I have found.
First, for short layered hair it works well as a pomade if you don't like the greasy or sticky pomades. It separates and smooths hair down without leaving it too heavy. I usually follow it up with hairspray just for a little hold.
Second, for longer hair it works really well to smooth frizzies and just lightly separate hair, again without leaving it feeling to heavy. It works really well.
It goes without saying that if you use too much product, it will end up feeling heavy, so start off with a small bit and work it through. Use a bit more at a time until desired result is found! Hope this helps. Let me know what you think ! Thanks, Emily

A Fun Before and After

Wow! This has been a crazy week. The week leading up to the beginning of school is always a crazy one. This one didn't dissappoint!
I have been trying to take pictures of before and after of some of my clients who are doing something different, I usually forget, hence the color and foils! :) Anyway, this is my client Camille. She has always had long layered hair. Dark brown, auburn with chunky blonde highlights. We have been toying with the idea of going short for a while, she finally did it!

She went from a very cute senior in high school to a hot college freshman in 1 1/2 hours. Hope you like the results as much as we did. Click on the picture to enlarge it, the color looks a lot better in a bigger picture! Thanks Camille for letting me post your pictures. Enjoy!

Control Freak

Apparently I didn't realize that I was a control freak, until I cut my hair short. Normally, I am a minimalist in the hair product department. NOT ANYMORE!!! I have a new favorite product...
Sebastian's Megahold Shaper Hairspray. This stuff works! If you like hair that doesn't move in the wind, this is for you. You spray, it stays.

Normally, like I said, not my thing. But, with the messy layered look I have in the back of my hair, it is so thick it normally falls flat in a minute. This hairspray works like a charm.

I will be spotlighting a new "favorite product" every week. Hopefully you find this helpful.
